Digital Video Group partnered with our friends at Blue Ridge PBS on the new PBS Appalachia Studios at the Hard Rock Hotel in Bristol, Virginia.
A key part of the project design was a shared “Interconnect” between the Bristol studios and the Blue Ridge PBS studio in Roanoke. This “Interconnect” allows full studio control and production from either location — including cameras, switching, audio, routing, and graphics.
The project utilizes six channels of Ross Video SRT transmission which provides five streams of HD-SDI video with embedded audio from Bristol to be sent over the Internet to the Roanoke control room. The sixth channel sends the program audio and video from Roanoke control back to the Bristol studios. Device control is via a WAN over the Internet utilizing remote access applications.

The control rooms in each location are outfitted with Ross Carbonite production switchers and XPression character generators. Operators in either location’s control room can receive the raw camera and graphic signals from the other location and switch and mix the show locally. Or they can take remote control of the production equipment in the other location. Delay between the sites is minimal with little to no perceivable impact on productions.
We are honored to announce that this project recently won a Technical Emmy for its design and integration!
Thank you, PBS Appalachia, for partnering with DVG on this Emmy-winning project!
